Week of October 22nd-26th

Hello 4th Grade Town Center Families! Please see below for class updates and reminders: 

Veteran's Day Program
Town Center will be holding a Veteran's Day program to honor all past and present veterans. Papers were sent home today with learners for honoring veterans. If someone in your family is or was a veteran, please fill out the form and return them back. We also are extending an invitation for veterans to be honored in our Veteran's Day Program at 9:00 AM in the TCE Gym. Veterans will need to check in the office by 8:45 AM!


Storybook Pumpkin Patch
The Town Center Elementary Library will host a Storybook Pumpkin Patch for any TCE students that would like to participate.  At home, students and/or families can decorate a pumpkin to look like one of their favorite children's book characters. Students may bring their decorated pumpkin to the TCE Library 7:30-8:00am on Monday or Tuesday morning, October 29-30, 2018.  The pumpkins will be on display for viewing Monday, October 29 - Thursday, November 1.  Pumpkins must be removed from the library by 3pm on Friday, November 2.  Visit this link for details and guidelines: 

CGA Writing Competition (Optional)
The Coppell Gifted Association is gearing up for its annual writing competition. Below are a few reminders about the learner portion. 
- FREE for Coppell ISD students to enter.
- Open to any student in grades 4-12.
- Deadline for submissions: December 7, 2018
- Categories: STORY and POETRY


 
*Students may bring their decorated pumpkin to the TCE Library 7:30-8:00am on Monday or Tuesday morning, October 29-30, 2018.
*The Veteran's Day Program is Friday, November 9th at 9:00 in the TCE Gym. 






In Math, we are wrapping up our Personal Financial Literacy unit. We are looking forward to beginning our fractions unit, which will span 6 weeks. 

In Science, we are continuing our Earth's surface unit. Next week we will begin an Argument-Driven Inquiry Exploration about erosion of rivers. 

In Reading and Language Arts, learners will be writing an expository text over a special person in their lives. We will also be analyzing other story elements such as setting and plot and connecting our thoughts. Our spelling focus will be silent letters and our grammar focus will be irregular verbs. 

In Social Studies, we will continue our unit on early Europeans and settlements in Texas. We will discuss the motivations and impact of Spanish and French explorers, as well as discuss Spanish Missions.

The first session of Texan Town has started. Your learner has the opportunity to purchase a subscription for popcorn, or they can bring 50 cents every Friday. There will be 6 Texan Town days, so the cost for a subscription will be $3.00.

In Science, we are continuing our Earth's surface unit. We will explore weathering, erosion, and deposition.

In Reading and Language Arts, learners will continue exploring our fictional unit where they will analyze and interpret characters. Learners will also write personal narratives. 

In Social Studies, we will continue our unit on early Europeans and settlements in Texas. We will talk about the early explorers, such as Cabeza de Vaca, Francisco Coronado, and La Salle.

Metrocrest Food Drive
Our TCE student council is partnering with Metrocrest Services to provide food donations for local families and senior citizens. The food drive will run October 9th-19th, and student council will have boxes at the end of each downstairs hallway that leaners can place their donations in.

In Math, we are beginning our unit on Personal Financial Literacy. We will look at fixed and variable expenses, compare the advantages and disadvantages of various saving options, and ways to allocate weekly allowances. 

In Science, we are going to begin our unit over the Earth's surface. We will examine properties of soil and observe and identify slow changes to the Earth's surface.

In Reading and Language Arts, learners will continue exploring our fictional unit where they will analyze and interpret characters. Learners will also write personal narratives. We will focus on the spelling/grammar skill of adding es to ch and verb tenses.

In Social Studies, we will begin our unit on early europeans and settlements in Texas.
