Week of February 21-24

It has been a short yet sweet and eventful week here down C-Hall. Please read through the blog to see all the awesome learning that happened this week.

In Reading, learners finished up their Junior Great Book stations. We dived deeper into the riches of our Junior Great book through engaging stations and extension activities. Learners were given opportunities to learn and apply new vocabulary, reflect using a various points of views, and research topic relevant to the text to expand their knowledge.

In Social Studies, learners also reviewed and reflected on the motives of the early Texas explorers and how they adapted to their new environment. Moreover, we are continuing to talk about how Texas was influenced by the Spanish settlements and early colonization.

In Writing, learners continued to expand their knowledge and application of grammar rules. Learners were exposed to multiple editing and revising strategies in order to improve their writing. This week learners explained their favorite subject in school by going through the expository writing process.

In Math, we continued talking about division strategies. Learners started exploring different ways to interpret remainders. Learners used their knowledge of math to express their thoughts of how math can be applied and shown in our everyday life by going through the writing process.

In Science, learner were given authentic opportunities to dive deeper into the various forms and examples of impact. Learners explored in detail the how human impact our Earth. Moreover, learners reflected on the various types of resources found on Earth using specific examples.

Week of February 13th- 17th

It has been another eventful week here down C-Hall. Please read through the blog for descriptions and announcements.

In Reading, learners explored analogies. Learners compared and contrasted words in order to infer the relationship between words. Learners put on their detective caps in order to solve the puzzle of analogies. Moreover, we started another Junior Great Book. Learners continue to work on authentic stations in order to maximize their experience and comprehension of the text.

In Social Studies, we are continuing to dive deeper on the colonization of early Texas. Learners reflected on past experiences for when they learned something new.

In Writing, learners are exposing themselves and applying various grammatical rules. Moreover, we continue to work on the going through the expository writing process. Learners are working towards re-reading, revising, and editing their writing pieces.

In Math, learners wrapped up their input and output tables. In order to facilitate authentic and meaningful learning experiences, learners took a pre-test at the beginning of this week. Using the pre-test, learners are exposed to various division strategies to allow them the needed tools to maximize their efficiency and effectiveness when dividing.

In Science, 4A/B rotation talked about fossil fuels and asked the leading question, "how big is your carbon footprint?" Learners explored the impact of their own carbon footprint in order to make meaningful connections with the content.

Week of February 6th-10th

Thank you for taking the time to read our blog.  There is a lot of important information in this post. As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

In Reading, we finished up our unit on Poetry. We reviewed the various element of poetry in order to wrap up our unit on a positive Learners explored the differences among prose, drama, and poetry. Moreover, learners practiced applying their knowledge and skills by creating a Rhombus Poem that related to Texas History.

In Social Studies, learners continued diving deeper into the early exploration and colonization of Texas. Learners used the explorers that they have learned about, such as Cabeza de Vaca, Francisco Coronado, Jose de Escandon, or Sieur de La Salle, in order to create their own Rhombus Poem. Learners are continually exploring the uniqueness of Texas through various extension activities.

In Writing, learners started a new mentor sentence that required learners to apply their revising and editing knowledge and skills. Learners also went through the writing process by answering an expository writing prompt. We learned a new peer editing technique called clocking.

In Math, learners learned and practiced input- output tables and dived deeper into estimations in relation to the input-output tables. Moreover, learners explored the relationships among tables and practice word problems.

In Science, learners have worked on their impact learning ports. We have started talking about resources in a way that is authentic and meaningful to our learners.

Week of January 30th- February 3rd

This week down in C-Hall was another great one! See below for some of the great things your learners are doing:

In Reading, learners continued to explore poetry, and we started talking about drama. We wrapped up and applied our knowledge on figurative language and different aspects of poetry. Moreover, we have began exploring drama as well. Learners answered explicit and implicit questions that required higher level thinking and critical reasoning.

In Writing, learners started a new prompt and went through the writing process. They brainstormed, planned, and wrote out their developed ideas to a specific writing prompt. Learners applied their knowledge of editing and revising using mentor sentences.

In Social Studies, we continued talking about exploration and colonization of Texas. More specifically, we talked about LaSalle and his exploration to the Americas that led to his unexpected journey to Victoria, Texas. Learners also learned about the early Spanish settlements and missions in Texas.

In Math, learners continued learning about multiplication and various strategies they can use to maximize their efficiency with solving multiplicative problems. We learned about doing multiplication using the 'box' method, the standard algorithm, and using estimation techniques. Moreover, learners are examining the ways that they can apply multiplication in meaningful ways.

In Science, learners dived deeper into learning about matter. They continued learning and applying their knowledge using learning ports. Moreover, learners have just started talking about Earth science and its resources.

This week fourth grade had the privilege to meet and work with guest speakers from DTCC. Guest speakers came in and shared what coding is and looks like in the real world. Moreover, they worked with our learners to develop codes with hands on and enriching learning experiences. Please see below for the awesome time our learners had.
